The FBI has assumed a lead role in the hunt for hackers who apparently broke into the Apple iCloud accounts of hundreds of female celebrities to steal naked photos.

Amongst those to fall victim to the crime was Oscar winning actress Jennifer Lawrence, who has threatened legal action against anyone disseminating the pictures, after they were reposted on image sharing platform 4chan.

A priority for the team will be to establish whether the entire iCloud system has now been compromised or whether hackers were only able to access individual accounts.
