For Microsoft to see success in smartphones it needs to get the marketing right

It’s safe to say that Microsoft’s $7.2bn acquisition of Nokia has been a failure. Before yesterday’s (8 July) write down, Microsoft had already laid off a third of Nokia’s staff while waving goodbye to top executives including business unit head Stephen Elop.

Windows Phone, its mobile operating system, has seen its market share slip. Data provided by IDC shows Windows Phone’s global market share fell from 7.6% in the third quarter of 2014 to 6.5% in the first quarter of 2015.
