Image sharing social network Instagram now has more than 500 million users, less than six years after the service launched.

In a post on its official blog, the company said more than 300 million of these use the app every single day, and that 80 per cent of the userbase was based outside of the US.

In comparison, photo messaging service Snapchat announced that 150 million users a day made use of the app, while Twitter sees 310 million users each month – 44 per cent of which log in every day.
