Labour is reportedly considering incorporating a 2020 manifesto pledge to provide a basic income for every UK citizen as it grapples with the potential impact of a looming AI and robotics revolution.

Such a move would be one of the most radical overhauls of the welfare state since its formation and would see the current system of means-tested benefits scrapped in favour of a one size fits all payment.

Shadow chancellor John McDonnell is said to be considering the idea after influential left-leaning campaign group Compass came out in support.
