The Twitter account for the National Football League (NFL) announced and quickly deleted a tweet suggesting that commissioner Roger Goodell had died.

Boasting 19.2m followers, the hacked account announced the hoax death to a large audience, although the tweet was only live for a short time and appeared to fool very few people.

The association confirmed that a hack had occurred and that the 57 year was indeed not dead.

The offending tweet read: “We regret to inform our fans that our commissioner, Roger Goodell, has passed away. He was 57. #RIP.”
