Retailers rue Britain’s Indian summer as shoppers desert High Street

Whilst unseasonably warm weather through September was a cause for celebration for most Britain’s retailers have been less thrilled by the sunshine bounty, after being hit hardest where it hurts as a consequence – the pocket.
Retailers suffered their poorest sales performance since December 2008, when the global financial crisis was at its peak, last month according to the British Retail Consortium and KPMG as shoppers delayed snapping up winter warmers amidst the heat.
UK retail sales sank 2.1 per cent in September on like-for-like terms versus the month earlier with total sales down 0.8 per cent versus September 2013.
