Aldi credits supermarket price wars as growth driver

By Natalie Mortimer Budget supermarket Aldi has claimed that the ongoing price wars between Tesco, Asda, Morrisons and Sainsbury’s has helped it achieve stronger growth in the first half of 2014 than in the first six months of last year. Sales increased 36 per cent to £5.3bn in the year to December 2013 while pre-tax profit increased 65 per cent to £261m. Aldi’s basket size has also continued to grow; according to Neilsen data it is now the second largest in the UK, behind Asda, with on average 17 items. Twitter rape troll gets 18 months for 'campaign of hatred' against MP Stella Creasy

By John McCarthy A Bristol-based Twitter troll who bombarded a prominent female Labour MP with sexist and threatening abuse has been jailed for 18 weeks. Delivery driver Peter Nunn, 33, was today (Monday 29 September) jailed for retweeting “menacing” posts threatening to rape Stella Creasy, Labour MP for Walthamstow. The prosecution branded Nunn’s tweets as a “campaign of hatred” after Nunn started abusing the MP last July after she backed a successful bid to get Jane Austen on the British £10 banknote – a campaign started by feminist Caroline Criado-Perez who received similar abuse. Cartier stresses trademark dispute is to 'protect customers' not 'restrict' freedom of speech

By James Doleman Richemont’s Maisons, which owns luxury brand Cartier, has stressed that its legal challenge to internet service providers (ISPs) to block websites using its trademarks is not to “restrict freedom of speech” but about “protecting customers”. Cartier took court action last week to demand that ISPs – BSkyB, BT, EE, TalkTalk and VirginMedia – stop customers accessing pages where its trademark was being used to sell counterfeit versions of its watches and jewellery.
