By Katie McQuater Representatives from across the marketing communications industries came together to fight it out in a survival of the fittest ‘balloon debate’ on The Drum’s double decker bus during Advertising Week Europe. The debate, hosted by The Drum’s editor Stephen Lepitak, brought together six individuals from advertising, branding, digital, direct, media and public relations. Tasked with debating which one of their industries would best represent the future of marketing communications, panellists were faced with the daunting prospect of being ejected from the bus if they failed to step up to the mark – as judged by an audience of bus passengers. Homeless charity The Connection at St Martin’s launches 'Donate Local' smartphone app

By Gillian West The Connection at St Martin’s has worked with creative direct marketing agency Soul to develop a new app concept that could change the way the public donate to the homeless. The Donate Local App allows users to donate a small amount to the charity when they see a homeless person, recording their location via the phone’s GPS to enable the charity to locate the homeless person who sparked the donation. Equator’s Paciencia Canda named ‘Scotland’s Coolest Techie’ in competition looking to dispel nerdy IT stereotypes

By John McCarthy Paciencia Canda, an interface designer at Equator, has been crowned ‘Scotland’s Coolest Techie’ in a competition which will pit IT 11 gurus from across the UK against each other in April for the title ‘UK’s Coolest Techie’. The competition was organised by Daisy Group and UK charity Computer Aid International with the intention of challenging ‘computer nerd’ stereotypes and encouraging young people to take an interest in IT. Canda’s role at Equator sees him work on tools to help with the creation of webpage animations. His interests in basketball and guitar also helped the 24-year-old take the topspot.
