By Gillian West Channel 4 and Channel 5 have been giving more airtime to the Conservatives than other broadcasters according to research from Cardiff University. The university’s ongoing election coverage survey, which examined bulletins on Channel 5 at 5pm, Channel 4 at 7pm and 10pm on the BBC, ITV and Sky News, found Channel 4 and Channel 5 had given Conservative party voices about a third of election coverage airtime in their main news bulletins. By Gillian West Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein, the UN’s human rights chief, has criticised the Sun for allowing Katie Hopkins to describe migrants as ‘cockroaches’ in a recent column in the newspaper. The UN high commissioner for human rights pointed out that both the Nazis and those behind the genocide in Rwanda had also used the word ‘cockroaches’ before and asked for the UK government, media and regulators to show greater respect for national and international laws on curbing incitement to hatred.
