New York Times chief executive Mark Thompson hit by discrimination accusations

By John Glenday New York Times chief executive Mark Thompson has become embroiled in a multi-million dollar legal action amidst claims that he oversaw an ‘environment rife with discrimination based on age, race and gender’. The former director-general of the BBC is named alongside fellow executive Meredith Levien in a class action lawsuit filed by two black employees in their sixties who state that the paper favours young and white employees with no children. Amazon rides crest of a profits and sales wave

By John Glenday Online retailer Amazon has posted a healthy $513m profit for the first quarter on the back of a 28 per cent jump in sales which hit $29.1bn for the three months to March. Bumper sales of both Kindle e-readers and Fire tablets, as well as strong subscriber numbers for its Prime service, helped Amazon on its way for the period as sales of both exceeded the expectations of cautious analysts.
