Ericsson and Philips partner on smart street lighting initiative

Ericsson and Philips have announced that they are to collaborate on a smart street lighting initiative which will entail connecting lamp standards to mobile broadband links.

The LED street lighting model is intended to usher in greater energy efficiency for urban areas by renting space on lighting poles to network service providers to offset the cost of installation.

Philips reckon the new lighting technology can net savings of between 50 and 70 per cent, rising to 80 per cent when coupled with smart controls.
