A major Chinese government news service has made an astonishing attack on departing American ambassador Gary Locke . calling him a ‘‘rotten banana,” a guide dog for the blind, and a plague. The attack in an editorial from the China News Service on Friday has drawn widespread public condemnation in China.

The article reflected Chinese nationalists’ loathing of the first Chinese-American to have been Washington’s top envoy to Beijing, said the Boston Globe.
