Sainsbury’s overtakes Asda to steal number two spot for first time in 12 years

By Sarah Vizard The latest grocery share figures from Kantar Worldpanel for the 12 weeks ending 19 July show Sainsbury’s market share at 16.5%, edging it ahead of Asda at 16.4%. While sales at Sainsbury’s fell by 0.3% compared to a year ago, Asda saw a bigger decline at 2.7%, making it once again the worst performer of the “big four” supermarkets. Asda has been the second largest supermarket since 2003 although it is usually overtaken by Sainsbury’s over the Christmas period when shoppers traditionally trade up. ITV profits surge 25% despite ratings dip

By John Glenday ITV has posted a healthy 25 per cent surge in profits to £391m over the first half of 2015 despite a corresponding four per cent drop in the number of people watching its programmes over the same period.
