Samsung’s quarterly profits hit £5.46bn on back of smartphone sales

By John Glenday Samsung has recorded an 18 per cent increase in its second quarter operating profit to 8.1tn won, equivalent to £5.46bn, on the back of a 57 per cent rise in operating profit at its mobile division to 4.3tn won. Strong consumer demand for the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge handsets has buoyed the electronics giant which anticipates continued increased demand for its smartphones and tablets through the second half of the year –particularly with a new large-format flagship waiting in the wings. French media enact voluntary ban on publicising terrorists

By John Glenday Several leading French media outlets have chosen to cease publicising the names and images of terrorists in an effort to avoid ‘posthumous glorification’ of the killers following a spate of deadly attacks in the country. Daily newspapers Le Monde and La Croix have both signed up to the voluntary code whilst Europe1 radio will cease to broadcast names in an effort to curtail the spread of terrorist propaganda and BFM-TV will no longer broadcast images of terrorists. Google names UK and Ireland MD Eileen Naughton as head of people operations

By Staff Writer Google’s managing director of its UK and Ireland business Eileen Naughton is its vice president of people operations worldwide. She replaces Lazszio Bock, who has spent the last ten years shaping the culture of the internet behemoth.
