Australian Government proposes digital levy on giants like Google, Facebook and Uber

By Danielle Long An Australian Government plan to introduce a digital levy on global digital companies including Google, Facebook and Uber is gaining support from senators. The digital economy tax proposal would reportedly operate like a sales tax, with digital companies to pay a “GST-style levy” on advertising. The levy could see brands and advertisers charged more to cover the increased tax costs. Australian senators have expressed support for the proposed digital levy and agreed to support the federal government’s AU$176bn tax plan if the levy is confirmed. STV technology chief joins broadcaster exodus

City of Edinburgh Council bans advertising boards to improve pedestrian safety

By Taruka Srivastav City of Edinburgh council has unanimously taken a decision to ban from streets across the city, all the temporary on-street advertising structures, including advertising boards (also known as ‘A’ Boards). The decision aims to improve pedestrian safety and accessibility, particularly for those with disabilities such as sight impairments and mobility difficulties. According to a survey carried out by Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB), a third of blind and partially sighted people said they had been injured by pavement clutter.
