Sky toasts ‘exceptional’ financial results as bidding war intensifies

By John Glenday Sky has toasted the twilight of its independence after posting a 5% increase in like-for-like revenues to £13.6bn to cap what it describes as an ‘exceptional year’. Growth has been driven by strong customer demand for its Sky Q television service which has now been installed in 3.6m homes, an increase of 2.3m year-on-year. Double digit customer growth in the fourth quarter of 39% means Sky now has a presence in 23m European households which between them utilise 63m products, itself an 81% rise. Facebook reels from slowest-ever growth as privacy woes gnaw at long-term profits

By Rebecca Stewart Facebook‘s prodigious growth has experienced its slowest quarter since the platform went public, with the social network losing users in Europe and missing analysts’ revenue projections amid the Cambridge Analytica scandal and the implementation of GDPR. Facebook’s total ad revenue for Q2 amounted to $13.23bn, and while the figure was up 42% year-on-year, it fell short of Wall Street expectations. Former IPG chief David Bell to become non-executive at St Ives Group

Bell succeeded by Michael Roth as chairman and chief executive of IPG in January 2005 and retired as co-chairman from the company in 2006. Coca-Cola plays its part in plastics fight with ‘reverse’ vending machines

By John Glenday Coca-Cola has teamed up with theme park operator Merlin Entertainments to launch a new breed of reverse vending machine, which offers discounts in exchange for plastic bottles over the summer. It is hoped the tech will incentivise families to recycle after the soft drink giant commissioned research that established 64% of Britons would recycle while out and about if rewarded for their good deed.
